The Sandspur

The Sandspur Newspaper came to town two years ago covering the community news of Hope Mills and surrounding South Cumberland County. We are located in the quaint old building, formerly the Hope Mills Hardware Store, at 3790 South Main Street.  We also house the staff of the Carolina Trader and Acento Latino publications in this office as well.

The Sandspur is published every Wednesday with local stories of interest, featuring different churches, businesses, personalities, and community activities each week. Need a new recipe, check in the Sandspur for favorite Southern delights.  Our Share & Imagine page of community photos is a special treat.  We love the involvement of our residents and they seem to love the Sandspur.

Marilyn Farrell has been working with The Sandspur since October of 2006.  She is an Advertising Account Executive, handling the retail ads for area businesses and churches.  Marilyn has been in sales most of her adult life and thoroughly enjoys the interaction with this community.

Fayetteville Swamp Dogs

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the largest summer collegiate baseball league in the nation.  With 14 teams spread amongst three divisions, the league has grown exponentially in recent years.

The SwampDogs have achieved tremendous success over the last three seasons, since Darrell Handelsman and Lew Handelsman took over in 2005.  The father-son duo has raised the bar both on the field and in the community.

Darrell Handelsman, who doubles as the Head Coach and the Director of Operations, has amassed 114 wins in three seasons with Fayetteville.  He is all-time wins leader in Coastal Plain League history.  In 2007, he guided the SwampDogs to a 42-14 record in the regular season.  The 42 wins are the most in a single season in the 11 year history of the CPL.

Off the field, the SwampDogs have integrated themselves into the Fayetteville community in only a short amount of time.  Fun-Go, the team’s mascot, has made appearances at business openings, county parades, local events, blood drives, schools, hospitals and more.

In 2007, the SwampDogs spent the entire season collecting money for Special Olympics.  At seasons end, the SwampDogs organization matched the total fan donation.  We raised over 3,000 dollars, which will be donated to Cumberland County Special Olympics.  In addition, the SwampDogs teamed up with the Blood and Cancer Clinic to raise money for the Karen Chandler Trust Fund.  On “StriKing Out Cancer Night” at J.P. Riddle Stadium, over $4,500 were raised for cancer patients.

The 2008 season will begin on May 29.  Until then, the SwampDogs front office staff plans to spend time in the community, while preparing for another great year.

We encourage you to visit us on online at www.goswampdogs.com.  If you have any questions about the Fayetteville SwampDogs, please call our business office at 910-426-5900.
